Meet NLS’s Summer Associates!

Aarti Chandan

Hailing from Lewiston, New York, Aarti majored in political science and minored in administration of justice at the University of Pittsburgh.

Aarti has had a wide range of experiences while attending the University at Buffalo School of Law. She is the Articles Editor of the Environmental Law Journal, participated in the New York City Program on Finance and Law, and won the CALI Excellence for the Future Award for Criminal Law. She is rounding out her non-profit legal experience while working at the Housing unit at Neighborhood Legal Services this summer.

She has been a tennis player since she was five years old and enjoys spending time with her family and friends. When not doing that, Aarti spends time watching the show, New Girl, on Netflix.

 Heather Lynn Bashaw

Heather is originally from Malone, New York. She majored in psychology and minored in Spanish at Buffalo State and is currently a student at the University at Buffalo School of Law.

She decided to go to law school because she wants to help people who are vulnerable and underrepresented; the same reason why she came to work for Neighborhood Legal Services this summer.

Heather is a member of Zonta, an international women’s organization that empowers women through service and advocacy. She is a board member and the Chair of the Advocacy Committee for the Buffalo chapter. The organization partners with local agencies such as the Family Justice Center and the International Institute to bring awareness to topics such as domestic violence and human trafficking.

Before the pandemic, Heather started to learn boxing, which she hopes to get back to when her gym reopens.

Shane Green

Shane was born and raised in Hamburg, New York. He majored in economics at the University at Buffalo as an undergraduate. He attends law school at UB, where he is also a student director. He already has paralegal certification.

During the summer, Shane works in the Housing and Family units at Neighborhood Legal Services. He says he wanted to work at NLS to help those in dire need.

Shane enjoys soccer and has been playing it since he was four years old. He enjoys white water rafting on Class IV and Class V rapids. When he is not doing that, he tucks into mystery novels by Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Gregory Lebens-Higgins

Greg is originally from Rochester but now lives in Batavia and works out of our office there. He’s a student of the University at Buffalo School of Law, using his Terry M. Richman Fellowship Award to help assist in his commitment to public service this summer.

When not helping our clients with housing and divorce cases, he takes advantage of the bounty of the season by canning fruits and vegetables including peaches, jalapenos, and raspberries. He also enjoys reading books about history and walking his dog.

Greg earned a Master in Public Administration from SUNY Brockport, where he also did his undergraduate work in political science with a minor in anthropology.

He is an accomplished musician, playing the piano and viola.

Ashley Love

A Ransomville native, Ashley is a graduate of the United States Airforce Academy where she majored in legal studies and minored in Spanish. She earned master degrees from both American Military University and National Defense University and is currently a cyberspace operations officer with the New York Air National Guard.

This summer, Ashley works to serve domestic violence victims and hopes to continue that work when she graduates from the University at Buffalo School of Law.

She enjoys spending time with her dogs, Ruger and Liberty; they join her in many outdoor activities. Her hobbies include biking, horseback riding, collecting/ polishing rocks, and travel. Ashely also plays the piano, clarinet, and saxophone.

Austin Mowers

Austin is a native of Victor, New York, and currently a student at the University at Buffalo School of Law. He was a history major and a Civil War Era Studies minor at Gettysburg College and was inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta national honor fraternity for students of history. While an undergraduate, he volunteered at an organization called El Centro, where he tutored local Hispanic children.

Austin is particularly motivated to help people face the challenges presented by the pandemic while working at Neighborhood Legal Services this summer.

He enjoys camping and hiking in the Adirondacks and cross-country skiing. Austin is also an Eagle Scout!
