“Jenny” fell behind on her rent when she lost her job, and was concerned about the stress of an eviction on her pregnancy. When she arrived at her court date, she was relieved to find NLS representatives available for consult and intake. Though her situation qualified her to receive an emergency payment from the WNY Eviction Prevention Project, her landlord inexplicably refused to accept it. NLS advocates argued vigorously on her behalf, citing the extreme hardship she would be facing due to her pregnancy as well as the stress of having to change schools for her other child, in addition to beginning a new job. When the judge noted that he was inclined to accept the defense and grant a stay of the eviction, Jenny’s landlord quickly changed his mind and accepted the emergency payment, bringing her current on her rent. Jenny has since been able to begin her new job with confidence, knowing she would be able to remain in her home.
