SSI/SSD - QUESTIONS AFTER APPLYING

What happens after I apply for SSI/SSD benefits?

After you apply, your case is sent to a "disability analyst" who may contact you occasionally to see if there has been any change in your condition. You may also be asked to go to an appointment with a psychiatrist or psychologist which has been set up by the Social Security Administration. It is very important for you to go to that appointment, or to reschedule if you can’t make it. We suggest you contact either your local Social Security office or the analyst any time there is a major change in your condition. We also suggest you contact Social Security if there is a change in your treatment, doctors, or if you are hospitalized.

What happens if I move or go back to work?

You should also report if you move, go back to work, or your income changes. We suggest you always keep a record of any contact you have with the Social Security Administration. You should write down the names of the people you speak to, the date you spoke to them, and what was said. You may need this information later.

How long will it take for a decision?

It may be months before the Social Security office makes a decision on your claim. We suggest you contact the Social Security office every two months or so to check on your claim.

What happens if I am denied SSD or SSI?

If you disagree with a denial of your claim, you need to contact the Social Security Administration immediately. You only have sixty days from the date of a denial to start an appeal.

How do I start to appeal an SSI denial?

You start your appeal by completing and submitting the forms the Social Security Administration can give you. A telephone call to the Social Security Administration, by itself, does not begin an appeal. Failure to appeal a denial within the specified time will result in a final decision that you cannot get changed later.
