How do I apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits and/or Social Security Disability (SSD)?

The best way to apply for any SSD or SSI benefits is to go in person to your local Social Security office. The downtown office is at 186 Exchange Street, Buffalo, NY 14204. Other offices include:

           1.        Northtown Plaza, Amherst, NY 14226.

           2.        1900 Ridge Road, West Seneca, NY 14224.

A claims representative will help you fill out the application and tell you what (if any) additional papers you need to bring in. You should be given a receipt showing that you applied and the date of the application. If you are not given a receipt - ask for one! Keep the receipt with your important papers.

Can the Social Security office stop me from applying?

Everyone has a right to apply for these benefits and the right to a written decision. If anyone tries to discourage you from applying, you should insist that you wish to apply. You cannot appeal a denial if you do not complete the application process.

What if I can't apply in person?

If you cannot apply in person, you can contact your local Social Security office and ask that an application be mailed to you. However, we suggest you do this only if you cannot possibly apply in person. We give you this advice because applications can get lost or delayed in the mail.

What happens if I am denied Social Security?

If your disability case is denied for financial reasons we suggest you call our office at 847-0650 and ask for the Public Benefits Unit. If you are denied because the Social Security Administration thinks you are not disabled enough call 847-0650 and ask for the Disability Unit.

If you have any further questions after reading this informational letter, please feel free to call Neighborhood Legal Services, Inc. at 847-0650 and ask for the disability unit.
