SOCIAL SECURITY WANTS ME TO SEE THEIR DOCTOR

What do I do if the Social Security Administration asks me to see one of their doctors?
The Social Security Administration often asks you to see one of their doctors if they believe that more medical information is necessary. This doctor will examine you only once, and report to the Social Security Administration his or her findings. The doctor will not treat you for your problems, or prescribe any medicine for you. It is extremely important that you keep your appointment with the Social Security doctor.
What happens if I miss my appointment?Failure to keep your appointment can result in an automatic denial. If you cannot possibly keep the appointment, call the doctor's office immediately to reschedule.
What should I bring with me to the appointment?
Keep in mind that the doctor probably will not know your medical history at the time of the examination. Give the doctor as much of your medical history as possible. Be certain to tell the doctor about problems with your physical health and your mental health, including "nerves,” depression or anxiety--these may be important to your claim. Be very specific in describing your symptoms, pain, and limitations. Bring with you any medication you are taking at the time of the examination. This information will be very helpful to the doctor when he or she is writing a report.
How will the doctor's report affect my case?
Under the law, the opinions of your own doctor or clinic are far more important than the opinions of the Social Security doctors. If you do not begin, and continue in treatment, you will lose the chance to have a doctor on your side to help make your case as strong as possible. If you have problems getting a doctor or clinic to see you, feel free to call us again for additional advice.
